Korth Tielens is collaborating with Office Winhov and Bureau B+B on the densification project for the Kolenkit neighbourhood in Amsterdam. The current 222 homes will be replaced by approximately 343 social housing units. The housing supply will be more varied and sustainable.
The buildings and courtyards are organised on the basis of the characteristic open urban design, with a strong focus on collective and public spaces. In the new situation, three buildings are organised around a communal courtyard, a public courtyard and a small square. One of the buildings is located directly on the A10 ring road and acts as a noise buffer for the other buildings. The façade of this building is completely soundproof. The serrated façade refers to the neighbourhood’s name giver, the Kolenkit church building by Marius Duintjer. Large windows reveal the life inside.
The project is a close collaboration with fellow agency Office Winhov. In keeping with the elegant tranquillity of the Amsterdam Expansion Plan, a single type of brick was chosen for the design. Differences in façades and detailing provide variation.
