Tonkensstraat, Groningen

108 apartments, social housing Parking garage with 20 parking spaces Competition winner

The area around Groningen’s stadium is undergoing rapid development. At the heart of this area is a green corridor, a landscaped, car-free space around which the buildings are situated. The Tonkensstraat building is a T-shaped structure located directly on this green corridor.
The T-shape connects to the surrounding buildings and creates two semi-open gardens onto which the flats face. Every room has a view of greenery. These gardens contribute to nature inclusivity by providing space for trees, plants, birds and insects. In addition, the landscape plays an important role in rainwater drainage.

Ground-level maisonettes for families are located along the green corridor. Above them are flats that are accessed via a corridor. The flats are spacious and have a terrace across their entire width. Every room has direct access to the terrace.
The heart of the building is formed by a large, light hall with stairs and lifts. This space functions as the collective centre of the building. Voids provide views across multiple floors, while along the balustrades there is space for workspaces and informal meetings.
