Bridge Schipluidenlaan, Amsterdam

Bicycle and pedestrian bridge also suitable for fire brigade and ambulance

The Schipluidenlaan Bridge connects two new residential and working areas for cyclists and pedestrians in Amsterdam West. The bridge is part of a family of bridges in Amsterdam made of white concrete with dark blue railings and a strong graphic quality. The bridge is also suitable for fire engines and ambulances, which meant that the structure had to be relatively heavy. For this reason, the bridge has no railings, but closed structural sides. These edges are clad in deep blue and white glazed brickwork. The artwork “Na Regen Komt Zonneschijn” (After Rain Comes Sunshine) by visual artist Martijn Sandberg has been integrated into the brickwork.

Martijn Sandberg: “Through this familiar Dutch saying, the artwork tells the story of ever-changing weather – something we all recognise from daily life. The words on the inside of both railings follow one another in an endless cycle: ‘After Rain Comes Sunshine’ and, in the opposite direction, ‘After Sunshine Comes Rain.’

The stripes can be seen as rays of sunshine or as streaks of rain – it all depends on your mood and how you feel as you cross the bridge and look at the artwork.”

The bridge is positioned in such a way that it enhances the ecological route along the water, and nesting boxes have been incorporated into the outer sides of the bridge.
