The northern IJ banks of Amsterdam are in transition. From an inaccessible industrial area to an open, mixed-use zone. Right next to the arrival point of the ferry from Central Station is a cluster of cultural and work buildings. Bicycle and pedestrian paths, along with a chain of public spaces, turn the banks into an elongated city park. Bridge Overhoeks forms one of the connections. The bridge runs parallel to the IJ over one of the canals that cross the neighborhood and flow into the IJ. It is the southernmost bridge in the series of new connections over the canal toward the former port area.

The bridge is constructed from two steel box girders that slope in opposite directions. Due to the varying heights of the balustrades, the view from the bridge is maximized and constantly changing. On both sides, a large window has been incorporated. This gives passersby a framed view of the expansive IJ and the center of Amsterdam.
